Catcalling : Why It's Annoying

by - November 30, 2017

Hai!

Sooo, I posted this in the middle of my trip home from work riding a public bus. Today wasn't good so please excuse my negativity/rant.

I am a 23 years old girl wearing hijab in one of the biggest moslem majority country. Oh! And I get catcalled. A lot.

I'm not saying it has something to do with any religion because it doesn't. And you know what? I'm pretty positive that girls get catcalled even when they cover their appearance.

"Hey" "Assalamualaikum" "How are you?" "Where do you live girl?" "Uh so arrogant"

From the most modest to the least one. From a nice tone till a loud scream from very far away. I bet every girl has experienced it. I mean come on, like seriously, after weeks of getting catcalled from bunch of security guys in front of my office (arent they supposed to make me feel safe and not otherwise? So ironic), I learned to walk accross the way and I still get shouted at from far away. Oh my god. And if you think I'm being oversensitive, go experience being a girl in the middle of nowhere and get catcalled by bunch of guys.

Would you enjoy it? Would you feel safe and comfortable? And honestly, what would they get by doing so? Would they get the girl? Would the girl be interested? Would out of nowhere the girl would turn their head and starts a conversation with the guys?

Heck no. No to most girls.

I dont know. I really think it comes to the mentality. I mean, usually, in most cases, they do that when
A. The girl is alone
B. The guys are in group

And the case is less likely to happen if
A. Girls are in group
B. The guy is alone

So coward. And hey it's fair to call them coward because I definitely see the pattern, ok?

This mentality of being or feeling superior in group really really needs to disappear. It actually shows how they are individually mentally weak and only brave when around their own kind. And you know what? I'm not implying catcalling while the guy is alone is better. No. It's equally worse.

Can't everyone just minding their own business without making other people uncomfortable?

And o yeah, there is a thick line between being polite, or nice, as our people is said known for, and catcalling. There is a huge difference. And when you cross that line, you only make yourself look bad.
